Challenge

Flixmedia had built their infrastructure in a hosted data centre, which, by today’s standards, is a relatively fixed environment and isn’t cloud-native. This posed challenges for scaling up beyond a certain level and was hampering growth and new product development. They decided to move their entire infrastructure to the cloud whilst maintaining business continuity. This meant migrating one of the largest and most layered data sets, we’ve ever experienced in terms of volume and size of assets, size of databases, as well as multiple applications and servers.

Solution

Our technology and engineering team chose AWS for the rich toolset with lots of self-service capabilities, meaning upgrading infrastructure is an easy and relatively fast task as the services grow. We designed and built an initial architecture to largely map the existing data-centre configuration to an AWS cloud equivalent to ensure that we could maintain continuity and making sure not to lose assets during the migration. The final architecture, built on AWS infrastructure, that we have delivered for Flixmedia is highly scalable, and robust, with auto-scaling logic, to ensure the services are self-healing and highly available.

Impact

Our solution has provided Flixmedia with a self-service, highly available architecture, and an auto-scaling, auto-healing, secure, reliable and resilient cloud infrastructure. This will allow them to continue to service a global audience of retail consumers with peak traffic of 45,000 requests per minute for major worldwide events such as Black Friday and New Year sales. We’ve managed to do this with full continuity of service, zero downtime and full integrity of the data.
