To effectively test multiple video players and assess their capabilities consistently is a complex task. Spicy Mango has built a specific test harness and test environment to ensure a fair and consistent approach to evaluation. The tests have included work on connected TVs, quality of service monitoring tools and ad insertion compatibility.

Solution

We embarked on a programme of work to support ITV that involved:

Building framework applications
Devising a series of tests and methods for evaluation
Producing a detailed report to present findings, recommendations and next steps

The developed framework applications embed mainstream off the shelf video players to allow them to be run within Connected TV environments for evaluation of functionality, integrations, performance and stability of each solution. Each framework application was integrated to ITV manifest and media services allowing real world evaluation based on codec, encapsulation and content protection combinations.

The output of the project was a detailed report and demonstration with recommendations that will equip and enable ITV to make the right decision on the direction they wish to take with video players for ITVX.
